STOPFEMICIDEIRAN (SFI) RELEASES 2024 REPORT ON FEMICIDES IN IRAN

New York, NY – April 3, 2025... StopFemicideIran (SFI) has previewed the release of its 2024 report on femicides in Iran, which documents a disturbing rise in the number of women and girls killed in the country. Established in 2020 by ARAM in response to the tragic killing of 14-year-old Romina Ashrafi, SFI has worked tirelessly to bring attention to the growing crisis of femicide in Iran.

The 2024 report reveals a significant uptick in femicide cases, with 172 recorded incidents of women and girls being murdered, marking an alarming 16% increase from 2023. This amounts to one killing every other day, highlighting the scale of the issue. SFI’s report provides in-depth analysis of the victims, the brutal methods used by perpetrators, and the societal patterns driving these crimes.

Key Findings from the 2024 Report:

  • Rising Femicide Cases: A total of 172 femicides were documented in 2024, reflecting a sharp increase from previous years. An additional 31 murders are attributed to state-sponsored executions of women. During this period, an additional 8 women were also murdered following robberies, bringing the total number of reported murders of women and girls to 211, of which 172 qualify as documented femicides.
  • Victim Demographics: Over a third of victims were young women, aged between 15 and 35. The youngest victim was a two-month-old baby girl, and the oldest was an 86-year-old woman. However, many victims' identities remain unknown, highlighting the pervasive secrecy and disregard for the victims in these crimes.
  • Brutality of Femicide: The report highlights the shocking use of violence in these crimes, with methods including stabbing, strangulation, and gun violence. In several cases, perpetrators employed multiple forms of violence against their victims.
  • Family-Related Violence: The majority of femicides were committed by intimate partners or family members, reflecting the widespread nature of domestic violence in Iran.
  • Impact on Children: The report also underscores the tragic consequences for children, with 14 cases where children were direct victims and numerous others where children witnessed the killings of their mothers.

SFI’s Mission and Approach: SFI’s mission is to combat femicide in Iran through a three-prong approach: documentation, education, and empowerment. The initiative monitors and documents femicide cases, educates the public and human rights activists, and empowers grassroots organizations to advocate for women's rights. The organization also aims to raise awareness and advocate for policy reforms to prevent and respond to femicides in Iran. “This report highlights the urgency of addressing femicide in Iran and provides alarming data for advocates of women’s rights and activists against violence against women and girls,” said Marjan Keypour, founder and director of StopFemicideIran. “We must continue to work together to break the cycle of violence and ensure that these women’s lives are not forgotten.”

SFI remains committed to its mission and will continue to collect data, raise awareness, and advocate for policy changes that prioritize the safety and dignity of women in Iran.
