In 2025, we documented at least 187 cases of femicide in Iran,
out of 241 total cases of women’s killings reviewed in our database.
According to our records, this represents more than 15 women killed every
month — almost one woman every two days.

Recurring patterns of violence

The victims came from different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
They included girls, mothers, university employees, asylum seekers, and
successful athletes.

Although the circumstances of each case differed, our documentation reveals
recurring patterns. Women were killed after seeking a divorce, rejecting a
marriage proposal, asserting financial independence, challenging male
relatives, or being accused of violating so-called family honor.

“The actual number of femicides is likely to be higher.”

About the documentation

Our findings are presented in the 2025 annual report

Counted Despite the Darkness: Documentation of Femicide Cases

The report is based on cases documented using publicly available government
sources, media reports, and social media information.

Important note:
Our database does not represent a complete national count. Censorship,
fear of persecution, social stigma, limited access to information, and
the absence of official statistics all contribute to significant
underreporting.
